This is a translation of the article about the capsizing of Team Histos a week ago!
Last sunday the Histos J22 capsized during a training and sunk to the bottom of Braassemermeer. The team describes their adventure: While by the time of writing this article the boat has been retrieved from the bottom of the lake and the damage seams to be just some gelcoat damage and small items which floated away overnight. The team got away with just a scary thought in mind. The exact reason for sinking is still unclear but some lessons can be learned from this accident.
After the boat capsized the window was leaking heavily which caused excessive amounts of water to enter the cabin quickly. Even more water could enter the cabin via the entrance because everybody (4 crew + coach) was sitting in the back of the boat while planing downwind. Lessons learned here are to move forward as far as possible, 1 or two people to move to the mast and keel instead of staying in the back of the boat. Also someone could have used his or her body as a blockage for the water to enter the cabin.
After a day under water the airpockets were completely filled with water. These will be checked thorougly next week to see if they contain any leaks. From other peoples experience these are known to leak. This is something that everyone should check on a regular basis as J22's are designed to stay afloat with these pockets closed and watertight.
The biggest lesson learned is that the very cold water, currently still around 4 degrees only, can be fatal when no rescue is around to pick you out of the water directly. Thanks to the laser training session there were sufficient rescue boats on the water. Otherwise this accident could have ended in casualties. A tip for teams that want to do some training during the cold winter months is to make sure there is always a second team or a coachboat present.
Team Histos is happy to announce that the boat and the team are OK and will be present during the Braassem winterseries next weekend!
